Frequently asked questions
Does the app work offline?
Yes. The recipes, vocabulary, Kiku's stories and reviews are built into the app and stay available offline. Pronunciation goes through your phone's text-to-speech engine: depending on its settings, it may need the internet the first time a voice is used.
Why are some recipes locked?
Two complete recipes are free, as are the daily trio, the vocabulary and the reviews. Umaiya+ opens the whole catalog and Kiku's stories.
The catalog doesn't arrive all at once: it opens at the pace of two new recipes every Tuesday. A recipe still to come isn't locked by the subscription — it simply hasn't been released yet, and will appear with nothing to download.
I reinstalled the app and my subscription is gone
It isn't lost. Open the subscription screen and tap “Restore purchases”: your subscription is tied to your Apple or Google account, not to the phone. Restoring also works on a new device, as long as you use the same account as for the purchase.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
It is managed from the store where you bought it, never from the app:
- iPhone and iPad — Settings → your name, at the very top → Subscriptions.
- Android — Google Play app → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
The seven-day free trial must be canceled at least 24 hours before it ends to avoid being charged. Canceling doesn't cut off access right away: you keep Umaiya+ until the end of the period already paid for.
How do I delete my data?
Your progress, your cooking book and your settings are saved only on your phone. Uninstalling the app deletes them permanently. We don't keep any copy — see the privacy policy for details.
The sound doesn't work
First check that the phone isn't on silent and that the volume isn't all the way down. If the problem persists, it usually means no Japanese voice is installed on the device: you can add one in the system settings, in the section on text-to-speech or accessibility.
I found a mistake in a recipe
Please tell us. The recipes are written and cooked by hand, and a reported correction benefits everyone from the next update.
